increased to 17.2 per cent from 14.3 per cent.

The council’s assistant chief executive Isabelle Boyd praised the professionalism and commitment of staff and the hard work of the young people in achieving another very positive set of results.

She added: “These latest results are thanks to our collaborative approach to delivering the curriculum for S5 and S6.

“I would like to thank all staff for their creativity in taking this sector leading approach for the benefit of young people in our area.

“SQA examination results for S5 and S6 pupils in North Lanarkshire continue to improve in some cases doubling the achievement of Highers and Advanced Higher over the past 10 years.”

Across the country, a total of 150,010 passes were awarded to pupils on results day, down from 152,701 last year. Five senior pupils at St Aidan’s High School were also celebrating outstanding exam success.

Caitlin Borthwick, Emma Brannan, John Paul Cahill, Victoria Drain and Eve Loughlan all managed to pick up five A passes at Higher level.

The percentage of passes also fell, from 77.2 per cent to 77 per cent.

And while small, the decrease continues a pattern of decline since the new Highers were introduced.

The pass rate in their first year – 2015 – was 79.2per cent.

The success rate in Advanced Highers has also fallen, from 81.7per cent in their first year to 80 per cent this year.

There was also big celebrations for S4 pupils Connor Feeney, Josep Manlutac and Owen Hepburn gained seven As at National 5 level.

St Aidan’s High head teacher Claire Connelly was delighted all the hard work of all five pupils over the last school year paid dividends.

She said: “We are delighted with the success of our pupils in this year’s National Qualifications. Our percentage pass rates have increased in eight of the nine measures across S4, S5 and S6. We are particularly pleased that this year we saw an increase in the percentage of S4 pupils gaining five or more National 5 passes for the fourth year in a row and we achieved our highest ever percentage of pupils gaining five Highers in S5.

“I would like to congratulate those pupils who gained straight As at National 5 level and Higher level. This is an outstanding achievement.

“We are proud of the achievements of all our senior pupils, at every level of qualification.

“They worked hard throughout the year, superbly prepared by our dedicated staff and supported by parents and families.

“Well done to all and good luck to those who have moved on from school.” Release the capital locked in your house and retire to a luxurious Park Home. Two Exclusive Developments of Luxury Park Homes for the over 50s
