Derelict pavilions all ready for demolition

North Lanarkshire Council is expected to rubber stamp plans to demolish two sports pavilions in Wishaw due to their poor condition.
The pavilions in Heathery Park and Birkshaw Brae in Gowkthrapple are set to be deemed surplus to requirements by the council due to what the local authority describe as their “dilapidated condition”.
A similar facility in Calder Park, Motherwell, has also been earmarked for demolition.
In her report to the council’s infrastructure committee the council’s head of education (south) Lizanne McMurrich said: “The pavilion interiors are in very poor condition and in some cases the roofs are unsafe.
“Despite the best efforts to secure the facilities, young people have persistently attempted to gain access to the pavilions.
“There is significant concern for the safety of intruders, particularly in the event of a fire.
“There is also in some cases, evidence of vermin infestation.
“Complaints have also been received from local residents regarding antisocial behaviour, particularly in the case of the Calder Park Pavilion.”
Wishaw councillor Fiona Fotheringham agreed with the impending closures.
She added: “Both myself and my colleagues welcome this proposal to demolish these pavilions which have been unused for a number of years.
“These pavilions are derelict and in poor condition and a source of anti-social behaviour in our communities with many complaints being received from local residents.
“I am confident that local residents will welcome this move.”
The Infrastructure Committee meeting takes place today (Wednesday) at 2pm in the Civic Centre.
