Concern as pupils’ lives are being put in danger
Councillor blasts illegal parking near crossroads
A councillor believes a serious accident is waiting to happen due to illegal parking on a busy road.
Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor, Agnes Magowan, is taking the issue on North Lodge to the council after complaints from constituents.
The SNP councillor is shocked that people continue to flout the traffic regulations at the crossroads between Gavin Street, Manse Road and Edward Street by parking near the junction.
North Lanarkshire Council have since arranged the repainting of the 20’s plenty marking and the white ‘STOP’ lines at the junction but Councillor Magowan wants to see more done.
She said: “Double yellow lines are needed on the corners.”
“At lunchtime due to the fast food shops on the corner drivers park their cars right on the corner of Gavin Street, Manse Road and Edward Street - cars coming out these streets have a very restricted view.
“Worse than that, the school crossing patroller often has to stick his sign out between two 4x4 cars and then a line of small children follow him out across the very congested, dangerous crossing.
“I am very concerned about the safety of the children. The schools start again this week and I am worried.”
A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council added: “There are, at present, no proposals to introduce restrictions in this area. However, the road signs and markings have recently been refurbished to assist road-users.
“A recent check of Police Scotland accident data indicates there have been no injury accidents at this location in the most recent three-year period.
“School crossing patrollers experience on-street parking at many locations where they operate and are trained to deal with this situation, including locations where junctions are present.”
