BROGAN AIMING FOR THE TOP AS WISHAW MANAGER

- Michael Temlett

New Wishaw Juniors boss John Brogan believes his side should be targeting top spot.

Brogan took his first training session on Monday evening after it was announced he would be leaving Lanark United.

The 63-year-old takes over from Chris McGroarty, who left the Beltane Park side last week to take the reins at Kilsyth Rangers.

The new Wishaw manager likes what he has seen so far from his squad and wants them to challenge at the right end of the table.

Brogan, who will be joined by assistants Colin Mitchell and Scott Gemmell, said:“I’m really looking forward to it — and it’s going to be a good challenge.

“I first met with the players on Monday and we received a positive reaction. We’ve got a good squad of players to choose from and we’ll have another look at them at training again on Wednesday.

“There’s no reason why this team shouldn’t be challenging at the top of the league.

“This squad should be posing

a threat and we’ll talk with them at training about the structure of how we want to play and take that into Saturday.”

Wishaw open up their campaign away to Yoker Athletic but Brogan will have a potential headache from week one with suspensions and injuries carried over from their League Cup campaign.

But the former St Johnstone player is still excited ahead of the new campaign but admits it was a tough decision to leave Lanark United.

He said:“This league is very competitive but we’re lucky to have one of the better squads and the club have made great progress in the last few years. It was a difficult decision to leave Lanark because they were a great club but I felt I had to make the switch because this was a great opportunity.”

Wishaw take on Yoker Athletic this Saturday in a 2pm kick-off.
