The return of The Great British Bake Off last week was a ratings hit for Channel 4.

After a controversial switch from BBC to Channel 4 with new hosts, the show managed to retain its loyal supporters with just under seven million people tuning in.

To mark the start of the show, hosted by Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig, we took to the streets of Wishaw to ask our readers what their favourite sweet treat is.

Whether it is home-made or straight from the shelf, residents admit they love to get their hands on a slice of cake from time to time.

Wishaw mum Nicole McMeechan, pictured with daughter Sophie, revealed her favourite cake.

She said: “If I had to pick one I’d go for a cherry bakewell tart.”

Sophie is also a big cake fan and Nicole added: “She loves birthday cake as well as the cherry bakewells.”

Jean Black, of Motherwell, thought long and hard over her favourite cake before concluding: “I really shouldn’t be having them but my favourite is chocolate cake.”

Jean’s husband David admits he is not a fan of the sweet treats.

He said: “I don’t really have a sweet tooth and I wouldn’t thank you for a cake.”

Theresa Feenan, from Wishaw, admitted it was a tough choice.

The Tesco worker said: “I think Victoria sponge cake is my favourite.”
