Councillor has the drive to tackle dangerous parkers

- Lynn Love

A councillor has stepped up her efforts to keep children safe as drivers continue to park illegally on a busy road.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig Councillor Agnes Magowan is shocked people continue to flout the traffic regulations at the crossroads between Gavin Street, Manse Road and Edward Street by parking near the junction.

The SNP councillor took to the streets with Police Scotland Sergeant Alex Pllu last week in a bid to warn drivers of the dangers they are posing to the children.

Councillor Magowan put posters up in every shop and business at the corner and said: “It’s all down to thoughtlessness on the part of parents and grandparents. Their behaviour is putting the children at Knowetop at risk.

“Please help by phoning 101 every time you see someone parked on the junction. Let’s try and change lazy behaviour!”

North Lanarkshire Council recently ar ranged the repainting of the 20’s plenty marking and the white ‘STOP’ lines at the junction.

But Cllr Magowan wants more done and added: “Double yellow lines are needed on the corners.

“At lunchtime due to the fast food shops on the corner drivers park their cars right on the corner of Gavin Street, Manse Road and Edward Street – cars coming out these streets have a very restricted view.

“Worse than that, the school crossing patroller often has to stick his sign out between two 4x4 cars and then a line of small children follow him out across the very congested, dangerous crossing. I am very concerned about the safety of the children.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council added: “There are, at present, no proposals to int roduce restrictions in this area. However, the road signs and markings were recently refurbished to assist road-users.

“A check of Police Scotland accident data indicates there have been no injury accidents at this location in the most recent three-year period.

“School crossing patrollers experience on-street parking where they operate and are trained to deal with this situation, including locations where junctions are present.”
