Window win is great for Well

We operate in a different universe in Scotland when it comes to the transfer window.

Forget about £200million for Neymar, £50million bids being thrown about like it’s a couple of quid in your pocket.

North and south of the border are almost in two completely separate transfer windows.

But whilst Arsenal’s £92million deal for Thomas Lemar was falling through and Ross Barkley was deciding halfway into a £30million medical he didn’t fancy a move, Motherwell were rightly celebrating a successful transfer window.

It was never about making £100million profit for the Fir Park club – although bids of that figure would have been more than welcome for Louis Moult – but even the Steelmen wouldn’t have imagined to have such a positive few days.

The best bit of business, however, was actually carried out 12 months ago

When Marvin Johnson wanted away from Fir Park, a move to Oxford not only brought in money at time – in the region of £500,000 – but a sell-on clause has now paid off.

When Johnson moved to Middlesbrough for £3million a 25 per cent sell on fee meant a tasty £750,000 was on its way to Lanarkshire.

Another deal was struck for centre back Ben Heneghan for approximately £500k and whilst the youngster will be a loss, Well chief Alan Burrows and manager Stephen Robinson already had a replacement lined up with Peter Hartley.

Throughout the entire summer transfer window both Burrows and Robinson reiterated that they would not sell any player for less than their value.

Of course that figure is subjective but the most important thing is the club had a sum and stuck by it.

This was the case whether players actually left or whether bids came in for them.

Everybody knew that Motherwell’s resolve would be tested when it came to Louis Moult and, latterly, Chris Cadden.

Supporters will be thrilled in the knowledge that they will get the opportunity to see the two of them continue to play in claret and amber.
