Fall pensioner Liz so grateful for their help

Residents rush to aid OAP

A 90-year-old Shotts woman who was hospitalised after falling in the town says she is lucky to be alive and thanks kind-hearted residents.

Pensioner Liz MacNeil was walking along Station Road on the way to the Post Office on August 18 when she tripped and hit her face on the pavement outside of Betfred bookmakers.

She told the Wishaw Press: “I was on my own and when I fell I got such a fright. I had no idea how I was going to get back up or get assistance.

“Before I knew it I was surrounded with people who had rushed to help. There were two men trying to pick me up, one woman talking to me to make sure I was conscious and another woman who ran over to the butchers to get a towel and some ice for my face.

“One of them called an ambulance and they stayed with me until it arrived. I was so grateful.

“Who knows what would have happened to me if I was left lying there because I was losing a lot of blood.”

Liz, of Clive Street, sustained several cuts and bruises to her face and head and was kept in Wishaw General Hospital for nine days to recover.

She continued: “One woman named Janice Paterson came in the ambulance with me to the hospital, stayed with me while I was assessed and waited until I was admitted to a ward before she left.

“I have no family in Scotland so having Janice by my side made me feel very special. It was such a lovely thing for her to do. She even came back up and saw me a few days later.

“I’ll never be able to repay her kindness or get across just how much what she and the others did that day means to me.”

In all the commotion Liz was unable to get the names or contact details of those who helped her that day and hopes that our story will reach them.

She added: “I don’t know how else to get in contact with them and I don’t want to let it go. I want them to know how grateful I am.

“If they hadn’t been there to help me who knows what the outcome would have been.

“All we hear about is the bad things going on in the world and I wanted to take this opportunity to let the public know that there are still good, kind, honest people in this world.”
