Rovers hold on to top spot

-

Carluke Rovers ..... 1 Vale of Clyde ........ 1 Carluke Rovers held on to top spot in the Central District Second with a draw at home to Vale of Clyde.

The hardfought point means Colin Slater’s side continued their unbeaten start to the campaign thanks to a goal from Eddie Haley.

Both sides finished with 10 men as well in a fiery clash at the John Cumming Stadium.

Vale started well and always looked as though they were the side most likely to score first and did open the scoring 21 minutes in.

A free kick 10 yards outside the box was struck sweetly by Martyn Campbell and Rovers’trialist goalkeeper had very little chance of making a save.

The hosts almost equalised straight after the restart when a shot by Ian Watt from the 18 yard line struck the post.

Rovers couldn’t find a way back into the match for the rest of the first half and after the restart, Vale of Clyde looked more dangerous.

But they were made to pay for missed chances just after the hour mark as Rovers equalised.

An excellent clearance from Gary Gow found Watt on the right.

His powerful run through the Vale defence allowed him to fire a shot to the front post where Haley netted.

In the closing stages, Gow was ordered off following a tussle outside the box.
