Inflation rise More for nurses Politicians slammed People struggling

The issue of public sector pay has jumped back into focus in the past month with unions demanding our NHS staff, teachers, police and many more deserve a pay rise.

At the start of September, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon vowed that Scotland would end the one per cent cap on public sector pay rises next year.

In England and Wales the UK Government announced that police officers would get a one per cent rise plus a per cent bonus, with prison officers getting a 1.7 per cent rise.

We took to the streets of Wishaw to get our readers thoughts on the issue.

Isabella Abraham worked as a nurse for 38 years.

She said: “I think there should be a rise in keeping with inflation.

“I was a nurse myself and we got a good wage but it was very hard work.”

Alan Tyson took aim at the politicians making the decisions. “The politicians all got a pay rise,” said Alan. “They are getting all the money and the people seem to get nothing.”

Sisters Sandra Russell and Fiona Copland also agreed there should be a larger pay rise.

Sandra said: “Nurses especially should be getting a pay rise.”

Fiona added: “The cap has been going on for far too long and a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet.”
