M&D inquiry results given to prosecutors

Crown will examine accident which injured 10

- Ross Thomson

Investigators have completed a 14- month probe into a rollercoaster crash at Strathclyde Park which left 10 people injured.

Three children were seriously hurt when the Tsunami ride at M&D’s theme park derailed at 40mph last year.

Victims crashed 30 feet to the ground before bystanders tried to free those trapped in the mangled wreckage.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive was mounted following the crash in June 2016.

Their findings have now been submitted to Crown prosecutors who will decide if any action is to be taken.

It was revealed last year that the HSE had found “significant issues” with the “condition of the mechanical and structural parts of the Tsunami”.

And they had “serious concerns” about the maintenance of the Tsunami and other rides.

The ride was dismantled and removed in February.

An HSE spokeswoman said: “We have concluded the investigation into the incident which occurred at M&D’s theme park in June 2016 and the report has been submitted to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

“Any further action is a matter for COPFS. We cannot comment further.”

The completion of the investigation was welcomed by lawyers representing some of the victims.

A spokesman from Digby Brown solicitors said: “On behalf of the families involved, we welcome the news the HSE have concluded their investigations. It has now been more than 14 months since the incident, the families involved deserve answers and we hope lessons will be learned to prevent accidents like this in future.”

Last year a Shotts mum launched a petition to close M&D’s after a Tsunami carriage missed her son by inches.

Amy Thomas wanted the theme park closed in the wake of the accident.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report in relation to an incident in Motherwell on June 26, 2016.

“The report remains under consideration.”

An M&D’s spokeswoman said that they could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

The families involved deserve answers and we hope lessons will be learned . “Families’ solicitors
