400 homes for old Works site

Plans submitted for site near Main Street

- Ross Thomson

Newmains could soon be home to up to 400 new families thanks to a major new housing development.

Planning permission in principle has been sought for the major housing build on land east of Main Street formally known as Newmains Works.

Kenny Ross is a director of EMA Architecture who are the agents behind the proposals.

He said: “It is a brownfield site and it is in a good location with links to the M8 motorway.

“We held a public exhibition in advance of the application and the feedback we received from local people was positive.

“We also had people coming to us wanting to buy houses so it would appear that there is a demand.

“These will be family homes ranging from terraced to fourbedroom detached.

“There are a lot of homes being built in the area with the nearby Morningside development as well so the demand is there.”

Mr Ross added he expected a decision on the plans by January next year with work possibly beginning a few months later.

The site has been derelict for a number of years but was formally owned by the Coltness Iron Company before being taken over by Costain as a concrete products plant prior to its closure.

All the former industrial buildings of the site have been removed however there is a large amount of waste material still remaining from previous use.

The proposed homes will be a mix of two to three bedroom semidetached and terraced properties to four-bedroom detached villas.

EMA’s design statement concludes by stating: “The provision of a new area of open space and play area within the development will ensure the residents who are moving in will benefit from these new features.

The new landscape edge of the north- east boundary will also enhance the setting of the Main Street. The development will provide much- needed family housing within an area which is already suited to this kind of development.”

Members of the public can either object or support the application by logging onto the North Lanarkshire Council website.
