Budget airline Ryanair have left thousands of passengers high and dry after cancelling around 2100 flights.

The Irish firm have claimed they “messed up” the pilots’ holiday rota – and now face a Europe compensation bill of £17.7million –with a chunk due to customers in Scotland. In light of the Ryanair scandal, we took to the streets to ask readers their thoughts on the flights dramas and what their worst holiday experiences were.

Tesco Wishaw employee Collette Carlin said: “My flight home for Portugal in 2014 was delayed for a day and a half. It was a total disaster. We were all packed up and ready to head back home and then we were told we couldn’t leave. It was so frustrating. We were on the plane and then they put us off after a fault was found. We thought they were going to transfer us to another one but instead they sent us to a hotel. I did get £500 compensation right enough.”

Motherwell man George Ritchie said: “I think what Ryanair have done is terrible. The people responsible should be ashamed.”

Dorothy McLintock, of Wishaw, said: “I took a heart attack in Rhodes and had an awful experience in the hospital. I wasn’t cared for properly. I didn’t get washed or fed, it was dreadful. The most terrifying experience of my life.”

Mary Mann, of East Thornlie Street, said: “I can’t really complain. I’ve been very lucky and had no dramas. I feel for the people caught up in these problem with Ryanair.”
