Congratulations to Wishaw centenarian, Edna Craig, who celebrated her special birthday surrounded by her friends and family at her Netherton home.

Edna’s loved ones marked her 100th birthday with an afternoon tea at Netherton Care Home on September 22.

Edna received the congratulations of the Queen, delivered by Depute Lord Lieutenant Terry Currie, and the best wishes of North Lanarkshire Council delivered by Provost Jean Jones with flowers.

Edna brought up her family in Ness Street, Pather before moving to the care home in 2016.

Sadly she lost her beloved husband Thomas, 73, in 1985.

Thomas and Edna have two children.

Linda Houston, who is 71, and Thompson, who tragically passed away 19 years ago.

The couple also have four grandchildren, Craig, Russell, Kenneth and Colin and one greatgrandson Lewis who is 18.

Former factory worker Edna was a keen singer back in the day and often sang to raise money for charity.

Proud daughter Linda told the Wishaw Press: “My mum has a lovely voice, unfortunately I wasn’t blessed with the same one.

“She could sing anything you asked her to and my dad was always volunteering her to sing at events. He was very proud of her. She sang with the Alexander Brothers years ago and loved it.”

Before moving into the care home Edna was a parishioner at Netherton Methodist Church and regularly enjoyed going on day trips with friends.

Linda and her husband Iain would like to thank ever yone for their generous gifts and wellwishes.

She added: “My mum was totally spoiled on her birthday. She is still very aware of what’s going on and enjoyed opening up her cards and listening to the messages people had left her. I’d also like to thank the staff at Netherton Care Home for looking after mum and for making her feel so special on her birthday.

“She had a lovely day.”
