Festive panto magic all set for Motherwell Civic

- Lynn Love

Motherwell Theatre is getting ready to swing into action for the 2017 pantomime.

Comedy actor Ian ‘Sheepie’ Smith is confirmed to be starring in this year’s Motherwell Theatre panto, Jack and the Beanstalk. A favourite among locals, Sheepie has entertained audiences for the last eight years, in roles such as Smee in the 2016 panto Peter Pan. With humour that transcends generations, Sheepie leaves kids and adults in stitches! If you love to laugh then don’t miss your chance to see Jack and the Beanstalk live at Motherwell Theatre from November 17 to January 7.

Sixty per cent of seats have sold out already, so book now to avoid disappointment!

Ian said: “When I heard that this year Jack and the Beanstalk was coming to Motherwell Theatre I couldn’t wait to get back on the stage as Muddles, Jack’s silly brother.”

Production director, Bev Berridge added: “Jack and the Beanstalk is a classic because it has such great characters, we have Sheepie in it as the comic, but we also have the great giant who will scare everyone!”

He concluded: “This year’s pantomime will be the best yet, because we have invested so much into it.”

Last year Ian surprised his unsuspecting girlfriend with a romantic on-stage proposal.

After careful planning, which involved making sure both families were at the same performance, Ian surprised Laura McLucas with some help from his fellow stage stars and as the cast began their final bows, Ian moved centre stage to share with the audience his love story with Laura.

As the audience cheered, Ian ran into the auditorium to bring Laura, 27, on stage.

He said: “This girl changed my life, you’re my soul mate, you’re my rock.

“What you don’t know is I’ve been planning this since I knew I was coming back here, so Laura McLucas will you marry me?”

The whole event was also captured on camera by Motherwell Civic Centre caretaker Paul McNally.

Laura said: “My legs were like jelly when I went on stage. I honestly had no idea what was happening.

“Ian had planning it for months. He had asked my dad in August if he could marry me and after that it was all about planning it.”
