Brogan’s big break after another win

B’tyre Victoria....... 1 Wishaw Juniors .... 3

Wishaw Juniors boss John Brogan admits a two-week gap for his players could help make or break their season.

After a comfortable 3-1 victory over Blantyre Victoria, the Beltane Park side remained second, three points off Benburb with a game in hand.

A Vinnie McGuire double sealed all three points after Gerry Watt opened the scoring for Wishaw before Blantyre netted a consolation late in the game.

Now Brogan’s boys will have two free Saturday’s in the Central District First but the Wishaw boss admits he doesn’t quite know what to make of the break.

He said: “It was a really good win for us on Saturday against a good side.

“I expect Blantyre to be up there challenging at the end of the season so for us to win as comfortably as we did is very pleasing.

“We only had one substitute through boys being on holiday so that makes it even more satisfying.

“We now go into a couple of weeks without a game but I don’t know if that’s a good or a bad thing.

“It’s a positive in the sense that by the time we come back we’ll have the majority of our players back although Vinnie McGuire will be away.

“Sometimes you wonder if the break will take away the good momentum that we’ve created in the past few weeks.

“I have no worries that they’ll keep a high tempo and we plan on getting a few bounce games during the next few weeks just to keep us ticking over.”

Wishaw started the game well and never looked back after Watt opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a rare goal from the centre half.

Two minutes before half time, McGuire doubled Wishaw’s lead with a neat finish from 12 yards out.

After the break it was all one way traffic and McGuire bagged his brace five minutes into the second period with a penalty.

Vics netted late on but Brogan admits the start to his Wishaw tenure has been brilliant so far.

He said: “Since I’ve came in, we’ve slowly changed things and looked at making a few improvements and it’s paying off.

“Even when we’ve had boys away we’ve had competition for places most weeks and that’s great.

“We trained on Monday and we’ll train again next Monday but we don’t want to push the players too much. It’s important we get the balance right.”
