APD interview St Aidan’s High welcomed guests from the Association for People with Disabilities project in India.

Every two years, pupils and staff from St Aidan’s visit Bangalore to work with APD.

This year the school received a visit in return with Caroline McHenry welcoming five APD guests to the school and they enjoyed sightseeing throughout Scotland.

Sixth year student journalists Reece Larkins and Jake Campbell interviewed guests and discovered what their thoughts were about their time in the country.

APD volunteers Shree and Catherine have been involved in many things since their arrival in Scotland such as visiting the transport museum, visiting Victoria Park and SCIAF to help raise the profile of the importance of APD India.

They plan on taking knowledge back to their country.

APD volunteer and senior student Ellie Higgins enjoyed meeting the visitors from India.

She said: “I know a lot of people that have worked for APD in the past and I will be having a small party night alongside my dad to raise as much money as possible for APD.”

Fifth year volunteer Anthony Miller added: “I wanted to help APD in India because I am really interested in charity work.

“My aunt has been to India before and she tells me it is very cool and interesting.

“I’ve also had friends before that have done it.”

Having met the visitors from APD, both volunteers are eager to start their fundraising mission.

Geography teacher Lucy Kelly visited India last year and volunteered.

She said: “I first got involved two years ago when I came to the school and I’m always interested in trying new places as a geography teacher.

“I wanted to make sure I was doing something that would not only help the pupils but also the people further away.

“We’ve already had a bag packing day at Tesco to raise funds and they have invited us back at the end of October.

“The local people are usually quite interested in what the school have been up to and are very generous.”
