Perthshire punish Dalziel’s defence

Penalties cost Dalziel after good start

- Michael Temlett

Dalziel made it six defeats in a row after a 29-20 defeat to Perthshire at Dalziel Park.

Perthshire had been relegated last season but were reinstated in the league after RHC resigned their spot in the BT National League 3.

Dalziel kicked off, and put pressure on the visitors from the off and an Andrew Glover penalty gave Dalziel a 3-0 lead within a minute.

Within two minutes, Glover had another shot at goal, this time a conversion after a well worked try by Fraser Skinner.

Dalziel won a line out on the left hand side of the pitch, and worked the ball wide to Ryan Burrell.

Burrell drew his man and passed to Glover who put a kick in behind the defence.

Skinner was able to win the foot race, gather the ball and get his first try in his home First XV debut.

Glover added the extras and Dalziel were 10-0 up with only four minutes on the board.

Dalziel lost Dougie Clark to the sin bin shortly after, and Duncan Clow stepped up and converted the resultant penalty.

A series of penalties gave Perthshire good field position, and from a lineout, the ball was passed to Jonny Armitt who was able to score to the left of the posts.

Clow converted to level after only 15 minutes of play.

Les Barclay then recycled the ball through the hands of Davie Stewart and Glover, and then to Thomas Quigley who was able to score. Glover added the extras.

Glover extended Dalziel’s lead by a further three points, after a Perthshire player had kicked the ball out of a ruck.

Dalziel then gave away four penalties in quick succession and Callum Croughan dived in to reduce the deficit to five.

Andrew Guthrie then drew his side level five minutes later and with ten minutes to go scored again to make it 29-20.

Dalziel couldn’t recover and recorded their sixth defeat.
