Muirhead’s on his way to Muirkirk

- Michael Temlett

Kevin Muirhead has resigned from Newmains United and admits it was time for a ‘ fresh start’.

The 38- year- old has left Victoria Park and will now take up the manager’s role at Ayrshire District League side Muirkirk.

The former Hamilton Accies match analyst joined United in June last year and believes the club have improved on and off the park.

Despite a disappointing start to the season, with Newmains still awaiting their first point in the Central District Second, Muirhead insists it wasn’t easy to leave.

He said: “I can’t thank the club enough because they have been great with me.

“To tell the chairman Bill Carrigan about my decision was hard because he’s been great with me.

“I think I leave the club in a better position than when I took over.

“Financially, the club aren’t rich by any means but they have sponsors sorted out and the clubhouse is being worked on.

“People will look to the league table and see the club sitting bottom with no points and think there’s been no progress made.

“Sometimes it can be hard to change a mentality overnight and compete with teams who can offer more money.

“But ultimately I believe the club is ready for someone to come in with fresh ideas and they’ll be able to get a lot out of a very

talented but young side.

“The last few weeks have been tough and especially after the Royal Albert game when I considered chucking it.

“You have to go and enjoy football every Saturday and to be honest, that wasn’t happening as much.

“The club were brilliant for me though and I wish them all the best.”

Muirhead is relishing his opportunity at Muirkirk who have only managed one victory in the first four outings.

But he believes the timing was right and the move made sense.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it and it will be a tough test but they’ve got a fantastic set-up.

“They’ve not played too many games this season but beat Saltcoats 4-0 in the last game.

“It’s a fresh start for me and it will take a few weeks to get settled in and know the group of players I’m working with but I’m excited by it.

“I think after the last few weeks I knew it was time to move on and had discussed leaving before.

“But when the Muirkirk job came up it made perfect sense and I can’t wait to get started.

“But I hope someone can help Newmains progress.”

Newmains United are looking for a new manager, anyone who is interested should contact bill. carrigan2@gmail.com.
