Another case of domestic abuse is reported every day
New police figures reveal scale of ongoing problem
At least one domestic abuse incident takes place in the region every day.
Police figures show that in the last three months alone there were 106 attacks within the Wishaw, Shotts and Motherwell area.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “With the majority of domestic abuse perpetrated behind closed doors, incidents are often challenging to investigate.
“Domestic abuse encompasses all manner of crime types as well as conduct such as controlling behaviour or coercive control which, at present, is not a stand-alone criminal offence.
“All frontline police officers receive additional training to deal with these incidents thoroughly and professionally and are supported by Lanarkshire Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit.
“The division continues to support an increasing number of victims through the process of reporting either current or historical domestic abuse in addition to proactively targeting offenders.”
The most recent figures comes after Scottish Government stats revealed 4,006 cases of domestic abuse were recorded in North Lanarkshire in 2015-16 – a one per cent rise from 3963 the previous year.
