Calderhead High Powerful performers
Pupils learn about renewable energy
Pupils at Calderhead High School have been learning about renewable engery.
The event was held at the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride.
S2 pupils had the chance to participate in workshops in building their own hydro turbine, and engineer a wave technology model as part of a “Get Energised” investigation day.
S4 physics pupils also enjoyed a challenge day at the museum, where they got the chance to learn more about solar, wind, hydro and wave power by conducting experiments and meeting challenges.
The pupils also met some high-profile industry experts.
“Get Energised” is a programme encouraging school pupils to explore, discover and understand renewable energy and is facilitated by the National Museum of Scotland with funding from the ScottishPower Foundation.
Maths challenge
Two talented mathematicians at Calderhead have secured places at a national maths event.
As part of Maths Week Scotland, S3 pupils Jordan Muir and Lewis Campbell were invited to attend the UKMT Mathematical Circle hosted at the University of Strathclyde.
The event involved a series of lectures and workshops for the most talented mathematicians in Scotland. Jordan especially enjoyed the hands on approach of the workshops and both agreed that it was a great experience.
Scottish Schools road race championships
Calderhead High’s best athletes competed in the Scottish Schools Road Race Championships.
Pupils Fraser Barr, Lewis Tominey, Jessica Bowden, Marc Love, Robbie McPhee, Jordan Muir, Scott Weir, Dean McMillan and Jay Casserly represented the school at the racing event held at Falkirk Stadium recently.
Despite some impressive running, unfortunately the pupils did not win any medals. However, the runners all acquitted themselves well.
Scottish Judo Championships
S2 pupils headed to the Scottish Judo Championship recently where they bagged bronze and silver medals.
Emma Louise narrowly lost in the final and won a well- deserved silver medal to add to her impressive collection and Tyler King won three of his four fights, and came home with a bronze medal.
