Camera Club A large turnout of members is expected at the next meeting of Carluke Camera Club, when the guest speaker will be Alasdair McLeod from Maybole in Ayrshire. Alasdair is senior photograph­er with the Daily Record and Sunday Mail and the high quality of his work earned him a nomination as news photograph­er of the year in the recent Scottish Press awards. His work covers sporting events, general news stories and his talk will be of general interest, as well as of photograph­ic technical interest. The meeting will be held in St Andrews Church hall at 7.30pm on Friday evening and is open to visitors and club members. Last week’s meeting featured the final of the club’s latest colour print competitio­n, judged by Gordon Scott, a leading member of the Mid Calder club. Gordon gave an interestin­g analysis of entries and highlighte­d both strengths and weaknesses, before announcing the winners. In league two, Ian Gunning continued his impressive run by collecting first prize for the third consecutiv­e competitio­n, with his entry “Ayrshire coast”. In league one, three entries tied for first place including “The falcon queen” and “Beal ban morning”, both by Libby Smith and “Left out” by Gaille Gray. Next weekend will also see the club’s autumn outing, when a group of members will set out for two days to the village of Hawes, in the Yorkshire Dales, to explore and record the area’s local photograph­ic highlights. Day centre The member of Carluke day centre held a Hallowe’en lunch on Tuesday, in the Masonic hall with all the trimmings and gave them a real experience of the season with many dressed up for the occasion. A lovely lunch was served by Jennifer and her staff and the usual dancing session was enjoyed by all those attending. A raffle concluded another successful afternoon with vote of thanks given to all members for its success. Friday will see many of the members off to Fort Willam for the weekend, leaving the Crown at 9am. The winners of the games afternoon this week were: whist - 1 R Prentice, 2 M Penman/M Burns, and 3 J Stewart; dominoes - 1 F Hill, 2 J Hill, 3 T Paisley. Trefoil Guild The members welcomed a representa­tive from local organisati­on The Haven, as guest speaker at their recent meeting. The club’s new session opened with a talk on the work of the charity and their hopes for the future. Sincere thanks were given by club president Ruby Mitchell. The club’s next meeting will take place in the guide hall on Tuesday, November 14 at 7.30pm, and will include a talk from the Rev Elizabeth Clelland, of the Healing House group in Braidwood. This should be an interestin­g and informativ­e visit from one of their popular visitors. New members welcome. Prize bingo The Carluke Friends of Guiding are holding a prize bingo event on Tuesday, November 24, in the masonic hall. Tickets cost £1.50 and can be obtained at the Masonic hall’s Monday evening bingo sessions or by contacting president Ruby Mitchell on 01555 770553. Week-day service The week-day service held at St John’s Church on Thursday morning was conducted by Philip Fox. He gave an interestin­g message to all those present which was found to be rewarding. The congregati­on enjoyed tea, coffee and cakes served at the kettle’s on event in the church hall after the service. All are welcome to come along to
