Skydive team is falling for Wendy

High-fliers take on the challenge

- Ross Thomson

The sky’s the limit for a team of Wishaw daredevils.

The six- strong squad was assembled and inspired by cancer survivor Wendy Keane who battled back from a full hysterectomy and double mastectomy in 2015 after discovering she had the same cancer gene which claimed the life of her mum, also Wendy, back in 2013.

The 47- year- old’s husband Stephen, son Gary and friends Jimmy Smith, his son Greig and Gary and Ryan Penman all took the plunge and raised more than £2600 which will be split between the British Heart Foundation, Maggie’s Centres, Chris’s House and the Genetic Clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

Wendy, a domestic supervisor at Wishaw General Hospital, said: “For the first time in my life I’ve been stuck for words at how kind and supportive people have been.

“I was really emotional and humbled that so many people had donated.

“All the guys had a fantastic time. They were up at 5.50am to travel to Glenrothes; they made sure they were first up.

“Unfortunately they had to wait until 1pm for the cloud to clear.

“Once they came down they said the thrill was incredible.

“Stephen wouldn’t shut up about it; he said it was unbelievable. “It was a real thrill for them.” Wendy told the Wishaw Press earlier this year having a full hysterectomy and double mastectomy helped saved her life.

Three weeks after having the procedures, Wendy had a checkup when her doctor gave her the bombshell news that cancerous cells had already started growing. But if she hadn’t had the mastectomy car r ied out then it was likely she would have developed breast cancer.

We n d y , w h o lives in Cambusnethan, was lucky that doctors caught the cancer early and were able to remove the cells. She added: “I’m really made up. “I couldn’t believe the amount of money that has been raised.

“I’m sure mum would have been proud.”
