MEETING Access bid to the track

- Ross Thomson

Craigneuk residents have been finding out more about an exciting new bike track in Wishawhill Wood.

With construction of the new pump track under way, a new route to improve accessibility is being proposed and the local community are invited to have their say at a special consultation.

The new route, proposed by Central Scotland Green Network Trust (CSGNT), which is managing the delivery of the track would give local people better access to the facility and across the wider community.

The consultation was held at the Jim Foley Centre on Monday afternoon.

CSGNT development officer Mike Batley said: “The proposed new route would provide much needed improved access links from Craigneuk to Ravenscraig and Wishaw, particularly for people who wish to walk and cycle as well as those who might not have access to a car.

“It would also mean that people could avoid the busy Glasgow Road while also providing a safe route for children to get to school, walk through the woods and travel to the new pump track by bike or on foot.”

Designed for pedestrians and cyclists, the route would link Craigneuk with Wishawhill, taking in Meadowhead Road, Wishawhill Wood and Main Street.

The project is supported by North Lanarkshire Council who has allocated funds from the Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Fund to pay for the works with Central Scotland Green Network Trust carrying out the works.

Last month the council’s education convener Frank McNally said: “The new bike pump track will be a fantastic addition for the Craigneuk population and wider community and so the news that construction is to begin is a very positive milestone.

“We know of the tremendous impact which bike tracks have had on communities across North Lanarkshire and look forward to this exciting new facility delivering the same benefits for residents and visitors alike.”
