A hor t i c u l t u re apprentice from Wishaw has lifted a top industry award.

Danny Kelly was named APSE Environmen­tal Services Apprentice of the Year.

And fellow apprentice Jordan Rodgers, also from Wishaw, was one of seven finalists from across the UK.

Associatio­n for Public Sector Excellence ( APSE) chief executive Paul O’Brien said: “Our outstandin­g finalists have all shown exceptiona­l qualities and are a credit to their local authoritie­s.

“The apprent i c e awa r d s u n d e r l i n e just how invaluable apprentice­ships are to ensuring excellence in the delivery of frontline services.”

Both Danny, 19, and Jordan, 21, joined North Lanarkshir­e Council as pre-vocational employees in 2014, achieving modern apprentice level 2 after a year working and studying on a day release programme at college.

They are now working t owards a modern apprent i c e level 3 qualificat­ion, combining placements and college work, which they expect to complete in August 2018.

Councillor Michael McPake, convener of the infrastruc­ture committee, said: “Congratula­tions to Danny and Jordan on their outstandin­g success at the APSE Apprentice Awards, and for their hard work and commitment to their training.

“They have shown real enthusiasm for their training, and been praised by their tutors and the council staff they work with on placements for their efforts.”
