Everything is Rosie at Deans

- Tara Fitzpatrick

Deans Pharmacy in Wishaw launched its new state-of-theart robot last week with help from pupils at Calderbridge Primary School.

The robot dispenses medication through tubes at different stations, giving the pharmacists more time to spend with patients and customers.

It was partially funded by the Scottish Government which is investigating the effects of automated technology in pharmacies.

To celebrate the official launch of the machine, primary three and four pupils at Calderbridge Primary were given the chance to come up with a name for the new robot with an art competition.

Director of Deans Healthcare John Connolly said: “Being part of the local community is one of our core beliefs and engaging with local schools has been a good way to support health promotion in the younger population.

“The introduction of the robot presented a unique opportunity to talk with the children at Calderbridge Primary School about what pharmacists do as talking about a robot to them was something that really caught their attention.”

The three runners-up were Holly Scott with the name Medbot the Robot, Daisy Howie with Mrs Dotty and Jack Weir with Medo the Machine That’s Awesome.

Milly Pender was the winner with Rosie the Robot and had her name printed on the front of the machine.

Mr Connolly said: “We had loads of fantastic entries. Milly, who had the winning entry of Rosie the Robot, had said she chose the name because it was a happy name. “Everyone in the pharmacy agreed that it would be nice to have the robot called a nice cheery name like Rosie.”

Elise Burbage, teacher at Calderbridge Primary said: “The children in primary three and four have been learning about technology with me.

“We went to the pharmacy to see their new robot and find out a bit about how it had helped the workers and the impact it has had on the customers.

“The children could not believe technology could do all of this.

“It has been a fantastic experience and has interested the children greatly in new technology developments. We may have an inventor of the future in our classes.”

The robot’s ribbon was officially cut by Clare Adamson MSP who said: “It’s fantastic to see this new technology.”
