PRIORITY IS THE LEAGUE

But Junior Cup run would be a bonus, insists Brogan

Wishaw Juniors manager John Brogan insists the league will remain his priority after landing a clash with Dundee outfit Downfield in the third round of the Scottish Junior Cup.

Wishaw’s 3-2 replay win over Arniston Rangers on Saturday put them in the hat for Tuesday’s draw, where they were handed a trip to the City of Discovery on Saturday November 25.

A double from Vinnie McGuire and a Ross McGeachie strike with seven minutes to go secured safe passage into round three following a 1-1 draw one week earlier.

And while boss Brogan maintains promotion is the main focus for his side this term, he admits he’s hopeful of a decent run in the cup.

He said: “It always depends on the draw.

“You just wait and see who you get. It doesn’t bother us. The boys played some really nice stuff on Saturday and, if you are good enough, you will do well.

“For us the league is the number one priority, but it would be nice if we could get a run in the cups.

“We played very well. I thought we thoroughly deserved it.

“To be honest, we should have won more easily than we did but I will take just getting through.”

Wishaw can now turn their attention to more cup exploits this Saturday with a clash against Vale of Clyde in the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup first round.

Wishaw memorably reached the semi-finals of the competition in 2015 and the Beltane Park outfit will go into the match against the Central District Two side as favourites.

However, former Lanark United boss Brogan insists he will be treating the Fullarton Park club with respect and is hoping for another impressive cup performance. He added: “We will be taking it very seriously and I’m sure the boys will be too.

“League position goes for nothing in cup games.

“Training has been going well and we have a good squad to pick from.

“We will be changing round a bit but we won’t make be making a lot of changes.

“We are making sure all the boys are getting game time.

“We look at every game... it’s very much horses for courses.

“We can play a number of different formations and we can change the personnel around too so it’s a good position to be in.”

Elsewhere in this week’s cup action Auchinleck Talbot face Carluke Rovers while Shotts Bon Accord take on East Kilbride Thistle and Newmains United face a tricky trip to St Roch’s.
