Darts stars out to entertain us

-

For football fans, the international break dragged on in its usual fashion last weekend as we all clamoured to watch something entertaining.

Scotland’s friendly against Holland wasn’t the answer.

Neither was the Auld Enemy taking on Germany at Wembley.

As for Ireland and Northern Ireland’s qualifiers – don’t get me started on these all-important but eternally-dull games.

If you wanted proper entertainment, the Grand Slam of Darts was the event to watch.

Down in Wolverhampton, the best from the sport’s two governing bodies – the Professional Darts Corporation and the British Darts Organisation – were going head-to-head.

This year has been one of the most enjoyable Grand Slams ever.

Seeing top stars like Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and Michael van Gerwen is always a joy plus waving goodbye to Phil Taylor in his last ever Grand Slam will be a memorable moment.

But two of the best stories have come from players who the majority of the Sky Sports audience would never have heard of before.

Cameron Menzies, who plays in the Airdrie and District Darts League, has been a surprise package who has entertained the audience.

The Muirkirk-born thrower is representing his country with pride and has qualified for the last 16 – an achievement he would never have dreamed of when grouped with his idol Gary Anderson and major winner Simon Whitlock.

A fantastic performance against Anderson and a thrilling win over Whitlock had Menzies well on his way to qualification.

But it was his antics that really amused the crowd.

It’s clear to see he loves the sport and feels lucky just to be a part of the tournament and his facial expressions don’t hide how he’s feeling at any given moment.

Emotions were on show throughout his campaign and the final man in Menzies’group provoked the biggest reaction.

Berry van Peer came into the tournament relatively unknown but
