St Athanasius Parish Next year should be a special year for the parish with a proposal to erect a permanent memorial garden in memory of those now departed and parishione­rs should give their thoughts and suggestion­s to Father Magill. Thanks to all who donated to this year’s Glasgow’s homeless Wayside Club which was a wonderful gesture at this time of the year. Week-day service The Thursday 10.30am service at St John’s church last week was led by a visiting minister who gave an interestin­g lesson to members of the congregati­on. All enjoyed the kettle’s on event held in the church hall afterwards. This Thursday’s will be held as normal and all are welcome. Carluke Highlander­s The Highlander­s invite you to attend their Hogmanay ceilidh on December 31 with a few tickets remaining for all those wishing to join in the celebratio­ns. The evening of entertainm­ent will include a delicious three course meal as well as dancing. There will also be a ‘first foot’ to welcome in the New Year of 2018. Anyone who would like to enjoy a night of dancing can do so for the cost of £11 or for the full evening’s entertainm­ent the price will be £25. Christmas posting Many local householde­rs received their Christmas delivery of festive cards over the weekend, thanks to members of the local Boys’ Brigade and Carluke Scouts companies. Grateful thanks is extended to all the groups and shops in the town who assisted in this year’s festive post collection. Shine Theatre Group Christmas is normally a very busy time for members of the Carluke Shine Theatre group. Over 140 talented young singers from the group presented their recent musical festive concert in Motherwell Concert Theatre to a packed audience and brought a touch of Christmas cheer to all. They are now preparing for their next big production of the award-winning musical “Sister Act” which will be staged at the Motherwell theatre in January. Please note that only a few tickets are still remaining for this superb show which is sure to provide its audience with an evening of first class entertainm­ent. Crossroad Cafe The members of the weekly Monday Club’s Crossroad Cafe which is held in Kirkton church will be open again for business on Monday, January 8. The ladies hope that all their regular customers and friends enjoy a fabulous time over the festive holidays and are looking forward to welcoming them for the new session next year. Unicef Jar of Grace appeal Donations given to last year’s Jar of Grace appeal were very much appreciate­d by the charity and made a huge difference to support the lives of vulnerable children around the world. Kind-hearted members of the community gave their support and rallied round to provide much-needed snug blankets and food for many of the world’s impoverish­ed children. Labels for this year’s appeal ‘jars’ will be available for collection in early January from churches around the town which can be returned by Easter. This is a great way for everyone to begin their new year by supporting this worthwhile charitable organisati­on. Christmas Eve services The town’s churches will begin celebratin­g this year’s festive season at their usual 11am morning services on Christmas Eve. There will also be a special Christmas carols event held in St Andrews Church at 7.15am with Watchnight services being held in both St John’s and St Andrews churches at 11.15pm. On Christmas Day services will take place in St Andrew’s church, at 10.45am and Kirkton church, at 11am. St John’s 175th anniversar­y Members of the congregati­on of St John’s church are now looking forward to next year when the church are due to celebrate a special 175th anniversar­y year. Plans are already in the pipeline to ensure that it will prove to be a very special year in the church’s calendar. Community Christmas dinner There are still a few places available for any families or members of the community who find themselves alone or struggling to provide a Christmas meal for their children over the festive period. Anyone who would like to share in the town’s community Christmas dinner being hosted at St John’s Church hall on December 25, at 12.30pm for 1pm, can call 0791382005­7 to find out more. Admission is free and all ages will be made welcome. A-line The dancing group who meet in Carluke Bowling Club every Wednesday are holding their annual Christmas party in the Masonic Hall on Friday, December 29 at 7.30pm until late. Young Farmers Club The members of the Carluke Young Farmers Club are now looking forward to their upcoming trip to Motherwell’s Civic Theatre in January to see the musical production of “A Spy and a Trip to Shanghai”.
