Wishaw’s Tesco Extra staff in threat to jobs

Supermarket giants will axe 1700 posts nationwide

- Niki Tennant

Anxious staff and bosses at one of Wishaw’s biggest supermarkets were this week fearful for their jobs.

Tesco announced it is axing 1700 posts from its UK-wide stores and warehouses as part of its turnaround strategy.

Workers at Tesco Extra in Wishaw’s Belhaven Road learned this week about the latest cull.

The Belhaven Road store is one of 266 Tesco Extra stores across the UK at which the job of customer experience manager will be scrapped.

So too will the roles of people manager and compliance manager.

In a statement, Tesco PLC said the move would “give line managers more direct accountability for customer service, in line with all other Tesco stores.”

UK chief executive Matt Davies said the changes were “necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future”.

Describing the decision as “changes to simplify its operational structures to improve efficiency and give line managers clearer accountability for colleague and customer experience,” Mr Davies said.

“These changes remove complexity and will deliver a simpler, more helpful experience for colleagues and customers. We recognise these are difficult changes to make, but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set up for the future.”

The supermarket giant said affected employees will be supported to find alternative roles within the business wherever possible.
