Making the most of career chances

Dalziel High pupils were happy to welcome Deputy First Minister of Scotland John Swinney to their school.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills visited the Motherwell school last week to talk with pupils and staff about the award- winning Developing the Young Workforce Programme and Education Partnershi­p.

Mr Swinney heard of the exciting opportunit­ies offered through partnershi­ps between Dalziel High School and WorleyPars­ons and Morgan Stanley. These include work experience programmes, CV preparatio­n and support of skill developmen­t activities.

One of the pupils sharing his experience of partnershi­p working was S3 pupil Callum Sergeant.

“It was empowering to have the chance to share with Mr Swinney the numerous skill -based activities

and industry partnershi­p working which is offered at Dalziel High School as part of the school environmen­t,” he said.

“I have certainly benefited from these opportunit­ies and I am determined to shape my career in the world of engineerin­g.”

Head teacher Robert Birch added: “It was wonderful for our pupils to meet Mr Swinney and showcase the outstandin­g work going on across the school.”

S5 pupil Ellie Docherty has been shortliste­d as a finalist in the British Education Awards (BEA) 2018 for the National 5/GCSE category.

There are only three finalists from Scotland in this category.

The BEA have been establishe­d to promote excellence in British education and identifies and celebrates individual­s who have excelled within the British education system.

The awards ceremony will take place in Manchester tonight ( January 31).
