Newmains United’s new manager is hoping to restore pride in the struggling team.

Former assistant coach Craig Gupwell has taken over the reins after Gary Millar had to step down due to work commitments.

And the new gaffer has wasted no time in bringing in new faces to try and kick-start the side currently sitting bottom of West Region Division Two.

Former Mother well reserves centre-back Gupwell said: “I came in as Gary’s assistant in October and, with him having to step down due to work, it was a natural step up for me.

“I’m excited to have my first crack at a full managerial role.

“I’ll stay on the books as a player and will fill in as and when needed but hopefully I’ll be able to focus more on the managerial side.”

Gupwell’s task couldn’t be much more daunting. Newmains have endured a torrid season so far, losing 11 games on the bounce in the league and still looking for their first point of the season.

He has brought in pacey striker Eddie Haley, experienced shot stopper Mark Bissett and highly-rated

Paul Donaghy already and is confident his reinforced side can turn their fortunes around as long as they band together.

“The boys I’ve brought in know the situation and are very committed to the task in hand,” he said.

“I’m confident these boys will help turn us around.

“As long as everyone sticks together results will improve on the park.

“We need to get the club on a better financial footing. There’s virtually no funds in the club and results help to bring in sponsorship.”

Newmains are currently looking for new committee members, to help out on match days, as well as supporter’s club members. Contact the club’s Facebook page for more information.
