Speed bump plan

-

Proposals to introduce speed bumps on three Wishaw town centre streets are set to be approved.

The council’s infrastructure committee is set to give the green light to install ‘speed cushions’ on East Academy Street, Steel Street and East Thornlie Street.

The proposals, which could be rubber stamped at a meeting today (Wednesday) come after consultation with emergency services, SPT, councillors and other transport associations.

In his report, the council’s head of environmental assets Ken Forbes said: “One objection was received from SPT. SPT do not currently use any of the three streets for scheduled services but this route has been used as a diversionary route during Wishaw town centre works.

“SPT further commented that this route may also be used by school buses and by the MY-bus demand responsive bus.

“Speed cushions have been strategically placed to ensure that reduced speeds can be maintained over the full length of East Academy Street.

“The proposed improvements will reduce traffic speeds on East Academy Street, Steel Street and East Thornlie Street.”

Campaigns to help implement safety

Two nursing friends celebrated the arrival of their newborn daughters within hours of each other.

University Hospital Wishaw nurses Julie McMillan, who lives in Allanton, and Angela Anderson, from Morningside, are used to long shifts together in the hospital’s cardiology ward.

However, the pair welcomed bonny babies Holly and Elise within hours of each other on February 1 and 2 in the hospital’s maternity ward.

Angela, 37, said: “There was nine days between the due dates but Julie had Holly at 2pm on February 1 and I had Elise at 7am the next morning. restrictions on Steel Street have been on and off for the past 30 years.

However, led by local resident Wilma Hall, the community felt they were making tracks on their plans more than a decade ago.

In 2006, neighbours said they were promised by former First Minister and ex Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Jack McConnell that action would be taken to put the brakes on speeding drivers in the busy street.

However, after being told they would be included in one of the phases of the streetscape plans, they were later told there was no money left for them.
