Braidhurst High A step back in tenement time

- S5 English theatre trip

On Wednesday, December 20, Mrs Paterson’s S5 Higher class enjoyed an educational outing to the People’s Palace in Glasgow.

The 26 pupils who attended found out about tenement life in Glasgow’s East End in the 1930s in order to enhance their understanding of the social context of ‘Men Should Weep’ by Ena Lamont Stewart. This is the Scottish text the pupils are studying for the Higher exam.

They enjoyed a lively guided tour of the tenement exhibition and also learned about Glasgow culture in the 1930s.

After a lovely lunch in the beautiful Winter Garden – where Robbie Caldwell was presented with a surprise a cake for his 16th birthday – the pupils then had some free time to take in the museum’s other exhibitions. The pupils, who were accompanied by Mrs Paterson and Mrs Jeffrey, agreed the day was extremely worthwhile and that it would really help them prepare for the January prelim.

Robotics club

Braidhurst’s Robotics Club is going from strength to strength as the 18 members will soon take part in the regional finals of the Vex Robotics Challenge 2017/18 ‘In the Zone’.

The pupils will compete against other schools from North Lanarkshire in the day- long event which will be held at the Motherwell campus of New College Lanarkshire. Three teams from Braidhurst will participate in the regional finals under the team names Energize, Kqual- I-T, and Violet. Some club members will also be showcasing the Vex robotics STEM initiative by demonstrating robotic systems they have made.

The group has beaten off 33,000 participants from around the world to become a ‘Beta’ test site for the new generation of Vex robotic systems that were showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Robotics Club’s success and awards have been due to the support of the lecturers from New College Lanarkshire, namely Mr Michael McGuire and Ms Lisa Nicholson.

Football

Braidhurst’s football teams enjoyed recent success with the U16 squad winning 4-2 against Airdrie Academy in the Lanarkshire Cup ( goals from Kyle Fleming, Paul Reid, Barry Frew and Marley Redfern). The U14 team put on a stunning performance against Currie High School in the Scottish Cup winning 6-0 (goals from Alex Lowry, Kyle Laikowski, Dylan Kerr, Darryl Love and not one but two goals from Max Johnson).

SFA Performance School

The Scottish FA Performance School selection process for August 2018 has officially opened for boys and girls in the current Primary 7 cohort of Braidhurt High’s primary schools.

Please note that the Performance School programme is aimed at the most talented individual players therefore is not appropriate for players who only play for recreational purposes.

The aim is to bring together the best young footballers from the area into a four-year individual training and support programme designed by the Scottish Football Association.

High quality specialist Performance Youth coaches (full-time employees of the Scottish FA) and additional qualified staff will deliver the programme to the selected players. The performance manager and Braidhurst’s head teacher will have overall responsibility for the direction and organisation of the Performance School, including pupils achieving the right balance between sport and academic life.

To apply please visit https:// www. scottishfa. co. uk/ performance/ jdperformance-schools/applications/ – this is the only way in which you can apply as paper copies of the application form will not be accepted.

All applications must be submitted online no later than Thursday, February 15, for Club Academy Scotland players.

School of football

The aim of the programme is to develop technical, tactical, physical and mental skills as a player as well as promoting positive social skills and increased motivation towards academic progress.

Players are involved in daily coaching sessions for the three years of their school life, so must display a good technical standard to cope with the demand.

The option to study for a qualification in Football in S4 is an option as pupils move into the senior phase of their education.

The Girls’ School of Football shares the same aims as the standard programme, providing a similar programme and range of opportunities.

To apply for the School of Football or the Girls’ School of Football please visit the Braidhurst High school website. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/nl/ Braidhurst/ then follow the link from the ‘Our School’ drop down menu to the ‘Football Programmes’ then to the School of Football and Girls’ School of Football.
