Hotel and Chapman’s pull out all the stops for town

Businesses support Wishaw

- Niki Tennant

Forty- six members of a slimming club who struggled through the snow for their weekly weigh-in have said a heartfelt thank you to bosses at a Wishaw hotel for coming to their rescue.

Slimming World consultant Nikki Musgrove hired a temporary venue during the recent severe weather blast to ensure members of the Wishaw class could meet and be weighed.

But when they arrived, they found the premises locked up, with nobody there to allow them entry.

Undeterred, Nikki and fellow consultant Eileen Allison searched for a local business that might be able to accommodate them for a short weighin session.

Commercial Hotel deputy general manager Eddie Eames agreed, and gave them leads for their laptop and scales - and use of the premises. “They were so accommodating,” said Nikki. “They pulled out all the stops and allowed us to take over their space. It allowed our members to get weighed and we were also able to present two half-stone awards and a stone award, too. We are so grateful.”

Another Wishaw business that went out of its way to support the community during the severe weather conditions was family butcher James Chapman.

While supermarkets ran out of basics, the 125-year-old butcher’s shop was the only business to remain open on Main Street.

And while articulatated lorries failed to reach communities with supplies, Chapman’s delivery drivers were still out on the road. “All staff made it to work and we did not run out of milk, eggs and bread. When the supermarkets failed, we did not let the community down,” said Main Street shop manager, David Rae. “We did not miss a beat. It was a case of local people coming through for the community.”
