Museum spot for art pupils

-

Creative Coltness High pupils are the focus of a new art exhibition at Summerlee Museum.

David Cringles and Briony Balfour both took part in North Lanarkshire Council’s Creative Residency, a unique initiative open to S4 pupils with interests in 3D design, creative writing, drawing, painting, music, printmaking, digital photography and drama.

The programme offers pupils the chance to take part in taster sessions before they apply for a week-long arts residency at Kilbowie Outdoor Centre near Oban.

Now their creative work is at the heart of a new exhibition at Summerlee Museum.

“During my time at the Creative Residency I feel that I have gained so much knowledge about the way in which photographs can convey complex ideas,” Coltness pupil Briony said.

“I have been taught the value of a good photograph and how our immediate attention is able to analyse the meaning behind the photo.

“I made many friends during my experience, who are similar minded and really friendly.

“The Creative Residency is a terrific event which allowed me to learn from others, enhance my skill in photography and become a successful team player. I highly recommend it and would encourage others to get involved.”

David added: “Coming to the Creative Residency I was pleasantly surprised by the large variety of objects and areas involved in 3D design, ranging from structural to jewellery to costume making.

“3D design offers attendees the chance to experiment in many different areas not often available in school. I chose 3D design because the aspect of creating costumes interests me.

“Throughout the designing process I learned many different techniques to making a dress with the use of sewing. The Creative Residency offers a chance to experiment in different areas, and a safe and caring environment for pupils to feel comfortable in their section.”

Councillor Frank McNally, convener of education, said: “The quality of the artwork at the exhibition is extremely high and everyone should be very proud of the incredibly talented young people we have here in our area. We are grateful to everyone associated with the programme.”
