An ambitious young Wishaw man is looking forward to a bright future in software development.

Kyle Colquhoun, 18, has secured a Modern Apprenticeship in Software and Web Development with the Student Loans Company (SLC).

He will spend at least 12 months with the technology group in the company’s Glasgow site developing his skills through a mixture of classroom training and on-the-job experience.

The programme will provide the Wishaw teenager with qualifications, skills and technical grounding in the most popular technologies and programming languages, relevant to a wide range of activities in software and web development.

In his first year, he will work towards an SQA SCQF 6 Diploma in ICT and Telecommunication and, if he is successful, will have the opportunity to progress to the SQA SCQF level 8 which is the equivalent to the second year of a degree programme.

Adrian Tucker, chief information officer at SLC, said: “It is great to have Kyle on board.

“He’s got the right attitude and is already injecting lots of fresh ideas and enthusiasm into the team.

“It’s also a good opportunity for us to foster new talent and ensure we are developing people with the technology skills we need for the future.”

Kyle commented: “Working with SLC’s technology group is a great start to my career in software development.

“Every day I’m getting the chance to learn from experienced professionals who have all been friendly, helpful and willing to share their knowledge with me.”

SLC employs 3000 staff, with 1500 based in Glasgow. Kyle is one of nine technology apprentices currently training with the company.
