Brave Bushtucker challenge for the Beatson

- Staff reporter

Burns Night

Calderhead High School celebrated Burns Night with two events in the school.

On January 25, the catering staff treated us to a wonderful Burns supper replete with haggis, neeps and tatties at lunchtime.

Mr Graham addressed the haggis and Mrs Prucnal and our talented pupils performed some Scottish music in the social area.

This was followed by a moving commemoration of the Bard by Mr Reilly in the Library at lunchtime on January 29.

S2 pupil Douglas performed on the drums and staff and pupils enjoyed some of Burns’ poetry and songs before tucking into some Scottish snacks. Charity cheque

We were delighted to present a cheque for £500 to the Beatson Cancer Charity in respect of money raised from our talent show and Christmas jumper day at the end of last term.

We were extremely impressed by the talent shown by our pupils at the show, including the prefect choir (who sang a moving rendition of Do They Know It’s Christmas?), the seniors who braved their own Bushtucker Challenge, and many more fantastic acts.

The winner was S4 pianist Heather, who performed to great acclaim and presented the cheque to a representative of the charity together with our School Captains, Jay and Nicole. Rockfest Battle of the Bands

Following their excellent performance at the talent show, Calderhead High School’s rock band, SITA, performed at the recent Rockfest Battle of the Bands competition in Motherwell Concert Hall.

Having passed the initial auditions, SITA was one of 10 bands that won a place in the final.

Each band had to perform a cover song and their own composition and competition was fierce. The panel of judges, led by BBC’s Vic Galloway, eventually declared Chryston High School rock band ‘ Voltage’ to be the winner. We are very proud of all the talented performers in our band. Glasgow Film Theatre trip

S2 Modern Language pupils attended the Glasgow Film Theatre recently to watch the acclaimed French film, Un Sac de Billes (A Bag of Marbles).

Based on the famous memoirs of Joseph Joffo, this film tells his incredible story of a young Jewish boy living in France during the Second World War and the hardships he and his family faced after they escaped Nazi-occupied Paris. Pupils were moved by the events depicted in the film.
