NORTH LANARKSHIRE
As winter draws to a under pressure over
“Bridge Street, Craigneuk, is abysmal and it’s a road that’s used for the rear entrance to Berryhill Primary.”
Over in Coltness,
were in agreement with which stretch of road needed most work done. Margaret said: “Earlston Street at the junction with Buchan Street - an accident waiting to happen.”
Fiona added: “Earlston Street onto Buchan Street is absolutely shocking!”
said: “Very, very poor repairs to the potholes they (the council) have so called fixed.
“They are not even cut out and sealed, just a shovel full of the cheapest footpath grade tar thrown in and whacked down.
“Our cars have to pass an MOT to be roadworthy so what about the roads?”
Finally, joked: “There is a massive pothole going into Netherton industrial estate. The vans and lorries are slowly eating away at it. “In a few weeks I will be looking down it to wave at the Australians.”
The rough state of North Lanarkshire’s roads network has been revealed in startling new figures.
The stats, obtained by the Wishaw Press through a Freedom of Information request, showed that in the last financial year, the council splashed out £472,000 on patching the 2,401 potholes reported to them by the public.
In this year’s budget, council leader Jim Logue committed to spending an extra £1 million of the local authority’s budget on improving the state of local roads.
However, Wishaw SNP councillor Fiona Fotheringham urged residents to report any potholes to the local authority as soon as possible.
She said: “Thankfully we have all made it through a tough period of weather, but are now assessing the damage following the thaw.
“Roads have taken a battering and pot holes have appeared all over our communities. We all know the damage caused to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists as a result.
“NLC are committed and have a budget set aside to carry out these repairs. Council staff are working continually to assess and fill these holes, however I understand the public frustrations and thank them for their patience.
“I have driven round the Wishaw constituency and noted pot holes needing urgent attention. I urge constituents to do the same. Potholes can be reported online by completing a simple form or by phoning Northline on 01698 403200.”
Independent Newmains councillor Robert McKendrick has highlighted the unacceptable number of potholes in a series of local streets.
These include Abernethyn Road, Branchalmuir Crescent, Eastwood Drive, Tiree Crescent and Woodside Crescent.
This week, Councillor McKendrick said: “Even before the snow we had, the potholes were bad.
