Dream snow sports trip for Coltness High pupils

A group of 20 pupils left Wishaw on February 24, heading to the French Alps for a holiday in the snow.

Little did the teacher who organised the trip, know that if he had stayed put, the Beast from the East would have brought the snow to them.

Regardless, the pupils had the holiday of a lifetime.

Ski lessons took part twice daily and finished each day by skiing right off the mountain into the hotel for cake and hot chocolate. Every pupil reached a level of qualification with Ecole du Ski Français (ESF/French Ski School) and were awarded either One Star or Two Stars.

This type of trip was very challenging and the pupils proved their resilience and mental toughness with their “can do” attitude.

New friendships were made with all the pupils looking out for one another but especially the S6 pupils, who took the younger ones under their wings.

The group were amazing to work with and all are now competent skiers.

Thanks to all of the families who supported the trip.

Cancer awareness talk

Former Pupil Support favourite Sheila MacNicol returned to Coltness to speak to senior pupils about breast cancer awareness.

As a representative of Breast Cancer Care she informed pupils of her own private battle with cancer and the wonderful support she received from Breast Cancer Care during her recovery.

As ever this was done in Ms MacNicol’s own unique way, with plenty of humour behind her inspiring words.

Mrs Bennie, head of the ICT faculty, had organised a bake sale fundraiser for Breast Cancer Care and pupils and staff raised the wonderful total of £700.

This was presented to Ms MacNicol on the day who gratefully received the cheque in support of this worthy cause.

Citizenship at Coltness

As part of their Citizenship course, S1 pupils in 1.8 have so far raised £240 for St Andrew’s Hospice, Airdrie.

Groups in the class all picked different charities to research and present information on, explaining why the class should support them.

After peer assessment, using Post It notes and marks out of 10, St Andrew’s Hospice was picked as the charity to support. It was then decided to do a sponsored silence to raise money for this worthy cause.

Pi Day

The maths department celebrated Pi Day on March 14.

Pupils paid tribute to a favourite irrational number with a wide range of fun games and activities.

Football news

On Monday, March 12, Coltness High School’s first year team went to a sevena-side tournament at Braidhurst High School.

They brought 10 boys and PE teacher Mr Livingston and had five games to play.

Their first game was against Braidhurst B where Coltness unluckily lost 2-1 with Reece Holden scoring for Coltness and Coltness losing this game to a last minute winner.

Coltness’ second game was against St Aidan’s B where Reece Holden’s brace and Lucas Muir’s goal helped Coltness to a 3-0 victory.

Coltness’ third game was against St Aidan’s A where they were unlucky only to come out with a draw with Reece Holden scoring Coltness’ only goal of the game.

Coltness’ penultimate game was against Braidhurst A where it was a surprisingly exciting 0- 0 draw with some fantastic saves from both keepers.

Coltness’ final game was against Our Lady’s.

Coltness pulled off a fantastic 2-1 win, with an early goal from Reece Hooper and an excellently finished last-minute free kick again from Reece Holden.

After all games had been completed Braidhurst B advanced to the finals, but second place could not be decided so it would go to a Golden Goal play-off between Coltness and Braidhurst A, with the winner going to the finals with Braidhurst B.

After a long game with a lot of chances, Braidhurst A came out on top with a superb finish sending them to the finals.

Overall it was a good tournament for Coltness with some exciting games.

The Coltness High school Under-13s football team put on a brilliant display against Taylor High School’s Under-13s, earning them a 4-1 victory at home.

Reece Holden played a key role in Coltness’s attack, taking the ball round the opposition goalie twice and scoring twice.

Kai Bruce also got on the scoresheet after putting the ball in the back of the net after a scramble in the box.

Riley Hill also got a goal for Coltness with a great bottom corner finish.

Trailing 4-0, Taylor High got a late consolation goal after a mistake in the Coltness defence.

Overall, it was a clean, hard-fought match with a fair result.
