Wishaw out of West Cup

-

Cumnock .............. 3 Wishaw Juniors .... 1 Wishaw Juniors were brought back down to earth with a bang at the hands of Cumnock Juniors in the West of Scotland Cup.

Manager Derek Holmes suffered his first loss since taking over the hotseat from John Brogan.

The former Hearts striker made seven changes to the side that beat Rob Roy in the Scottish Cup quarter finals, with squad rotation likely to be key as Wishaw face a big backlog of league games at the end of this season.

Scott Anson opened the scoring for Cumnock after 10 minutes with a low shot from the right side of the box after a Keir Samson assist.

Kevin Barry Grant brought the sides level thanks to a scrambled effort, after Cumnock failed to clear a corner that goalkeeper Darren Johnson attempted to punch clear.

A low shot from Andy Muir and a Paul Burns penalty in the last half hour killed off the visitors.

The well-contested match ended up with 10 bookings dished out, all coming in the second half.

Gaffer Holmes said:“It wasn’t a normal 3-1 game. I thought the boys did exceptionally well and if we’d taken our chances then we would have won comfortably.

“Their goals were all down to basic errors but we’ll learn from it.”

Wishaw next face Port Glasgow in the Scottish Central League cup at the Beltane on Saturday.
