Martine in running

- Niki Tennant

A Wishaw woman is bidding to become Labour’s candidate for the next General Election.

Martine Nolan, right, who lives and works in Wishaw as an engineer, is standing for selection to be the next Scottish Labour MP for the Motherwell and Wishaw constituency.

Martine is a local champion, launching her own initiatives which have helped the most deprived in communities across Motherwell and Wishaw.

She has provided support in the form of toys, clothes and food giveaways over the years, with last Christmas resulting in 1,500 children across North Lanarkshire getting the Christmas that they deserve.

Martine will be running on a jobs-first and pro-community platform to help re-ignite the flame of industry which has been neglected over the years.

She said:“I hope that Motherwell and Wishaw Labour members will back me later this month to be their next General Election candidate. I believe I am the best person to win the confidence and votes of the public in Motherwell and Wishaw, with a track record of delivering and supporting those most in need and putting real Labour values at the forefront; so that we can live in a society which is free of austerity and so that people have rewarding jobs, so that no one is left behind.”

The final election hustings will take place at the GLO Centre in Motherwell on May 24 at 7pm.

The Wishaw Press apologises for an error last week in which we stated Labour’s other election candidate, Councillor Angela Feeney, had been selected by the party.

Women from Lanarkshire’s coalfield areas who remember the miners’ strike of 1984- 5 are being asked to contribute their stories to a new project that seeks to examine their experiences during the strike.

The project is being run by a team based at University College London and the University of Reading.

Historian Florence Sutcliffe Braithwaite of University College London explained: “We are seeking women with strong connections to mining communities – wives of miners, mothers, daughters, women
