Princess Royal tours the region

Hospital and energy factory visit

- Niki Tennant

HRH The Princess Royal delighted crowds last week by touring the maternity unit at University Hospital Wishaw and officially opening Healthcare Environmental Group’s waste to energy plant in Shotts.

At Healthcare Environmental, the day was planned to celebrate the positive contribution that the new eco park will make to the environment and also the local economy.

A hundred and fifty invited guests, including pupils and teachers from six local primary schools, and employees enjoyed a party atmosphere at the company’s HQ in Shotts.

HRH Princess Anne toured the new facility with managing director Garry Pettigrew, speaking with staff and guests before officially opening the eco park.

HRH was presented with a bouquet of flowers by pupils from Allanton Primary School who had won a competition to design a useful everyday object made from recycled plastic.

Garry Pettigrew said: “Today was not only a celebration to mark the official opening of our new energy plant, it was also to thank our staff and customers who have been so supportive in making this a reality.

“Welcoming HRH The Princess Royal to open the eco park is a real boost for us all. But what made today really special was having kids from the local schools, invited guests, staff and customers who helped turn the day into a bit of a party.

“The park has huge potential with plenty of space to accommodate other businesses that can also benefit from our technology to transform waste into energy.”
