Badge of honour

Some of the great designs created by the kids

-

Newmains and Morningside primary school pupils put their heads together to come up with a new badge for their local football team.

Newmains United have revealed the winner of their schools’ competition to design a fresh emblem.

Councillor Cameron McManus had the casting vote and chose the design drawn by Newmains pupil Bethany Williamson, 11, as the winner.

He joined co-managers Paul Davies and Craig Gupwell at Newmains Primary to present Bethany with a family day pass to Blair Drummond Safari Park as her prize.

Councillor McManus said: “The competition was a brilliant idea by Newmains United and the kids loved it. All the kids’ entries were fantastic but the winner definitely stood out.”

Bethany’s circular design boasts a thistle with a head resembling a football.

A graphic designer will now turn it into the crest which will be stitched onto the strips for the new season.

Bethany said: “I really enjoy creating things and drawing so it was good fun.”

The Newmains committee have made it their mission to restore links between the revamped club and the local community.

Newmains Primary head teacher Scott Smith hopes this can be just the start of an association with the club.

He said: “Anything to do with the local community we’d be happy to be involved in.

“Football is very popular with a lot of the boys and girls so if the club can link in with us in any way, be it festivals or training opportunities, we’d be more than happy to play a part.”

Gupwell insists more plans are in the pipeline and said: “We’re well aware there are no quick fixes in our efforts of repairing burnt bridges within the community.

“But we hope with further initiatives over time we will attract a strong following who can have a local team they can be proud to support.

“Congratulations to Bethany our winner and the runner-ups.”

Passes to Flipout trampoline centre were presented to runner- ups Jack Mearns (Newmains Primary), Angel Kilmurray (Morningside Primary) and Kristopher McIlvaney (Morningside Primary).
