French fancy Backing English Argies win No support

Last week’s front page story regarding the Commercial Hotel’s World Cup promotion certainly caused a stir online.

An advertising board on the side of the Commercial Hotel has the World Cup trophy along with the phrase #anyonebutEngland.

But the sign prompted a furious response from Central Wishaw Conservative councillor Bob Burgess who demanded owners Manorview Hotel Group remove it.

We took to the streets to find out what locals thought of the sign and who are they backing to win the tournament in Russia.

Arthur Murphy said: “I think the sign is wrong. I will be supporting England.

“I’ve got grandkids and friends who are English so I don’t see the problem.

“I’m a Celtic fan but I want to see Rangers and the other Scottish teams do well in Europe. “It’s better to build bridges than walls.” Michael Ferrie didn’t see a problem with the sign.

“I haven’t really thought about who am I backing but it definitely won’t be England,” said Michael.

Friends Jamie Burton, Jack Delaney and Stephen Wilson also said they wouldn’t be supporting the Auld Enemy.

Jamie said: “I always back France at every tournament. I’ve got a bet on them so hopefully they do well.”

Jack added: “I’m looking forward to it. I’m going for Argentina to win it.”
