Delight over homes plan

- Ross Thomson

Councillors have welcomed the decision to give the green light to build more than 100 new homes in Craigneuk.

North Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee gave the goahead to Keepmoat Homes bosses who are seeking permission to build 111 homes on land at Meadowhead Road.

Craigneuk Labour councillor Kenneth Duffy believes the homes are needed within his Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig ward.

“I’m delighted that this muchneeded development has gained approval,” he said.

“A total of 111 new homes will go a small way to enabling us to fulfil the ambitious plans this administration has for Ravenscraig and the surrounding area, including the need for more council homes as part of the biggest council house building programme North Lanarkshire has seen for a generation.

“Th i s L a b o u r m i n o r i t y administration is truly delivering for the many and I look forward to seeing more of these ambitious plans take shape over the coming months.”

The 10-acre site lies derelict and is within the Ravenscraig development area.

There have been no objections to the plans from members of the public.

However, last August the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) submitted its objection to the proposals on the grounds of lack of information regarding the provision of heat and power to the proposed development.

SEPA then removed its objection last October after Keepmoat supplied them with additional information on its plans for the site.

Commenting on the council’s approval of the Keepmoat Homes housing proposal, local Conservative councillor Nathan Wilson said: “This is very positive news for the local area and the housing will be a welcome addition to Craigneuk.

“The development will be situated on the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks and it will make a positive contribution to revitalising what is one of the largest vacant sites in Europe.

“I look forward to work commencing and await the completion of the project with a combination of interest and excitement.”
