KNOCKOUT SHOW

-

Cambusnethan Miners Boxing Club held their home show recently.

Held in St Patrick’s Parochial Hall on Sunday June 3, in front of a sellout crowd, it involved clubs from all around Scotland as far afield as Inverness.

There were 14 bouts in total overseen by MC Craig Stephen of Sky Sports.

All were very competitive matches, with all boxers involved putting on a superb show for the crowd.

Gerry Taggart, from Cambusnethan Boxing Club, said: “Unfortunately some close decisions didn’t always go to the home boxer but each and every one of them done themselves and their club proud.

“Boxing is a very tough sport and just stepping through the ropes is an achievement in itself.

“Many of our fighters were boxing for the first time on the show and they conducted themselves brilliantly, being graceful in defeat and victory.”

Several special awards were presented on the day.

The award for best home boxer of the show went to Ashleigh Bannatyne who won her bout in convincing fashion and will be looking to build on this next season.

The Jim Barr Shield for most improved boxer of the season went to Callum Rodger, despite missing out on the win, which many thought he deserved.

Finally, to raise awareness of the tremendous work Chris’s House has been doing in the local community, the award for Boxer of the Season, was named the Chris’s House Shield.

Harley Boal was presented with the shield in recognition of his achievements over the previous season, his approach to training and his British title win last season.

This award will be presented annually to help raise awareness of suicide in our community and of Chris’s House and the service it provides to survivors and those affected by it.

Gerry added: “We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors for the show as well as anyone who shown support to our funds in any of our fundraising activities this year.

“All money raised is used to purchase equipment and finance the ongoing renovations to our gym facilities.

“A special mention goes to Lanarkshire Welding Company who very generously donated the steel to construct our new bag frame.”

Next on the agenda is the Monkston Box Cup, where Harley Boal is competing at the end of June.

This is a prestigious international tournament held in Dublin and the first time the club has competed in it.

After which, the club will take a well-deserved break before resuming in preparation for next season. Please check the clubs Facebook for training times and events.

The club is also seeking a main sponsor for next year. Any individuals or companies interested should contact Gerry on 07718882201 or use Facebook.
