Primary kids council caption comp success
Orchard are winners
Orchard Primary School pupils bagged a day festival prize after winning a caption competition promoting walking to school.
The competition, run by North Lanarkshire Council’s safe and sustainable travel team, saw schools from across North Lanarkshire asked to devise a caption for a photo of their active travel campaign.
The Overtown school won the top prize for their winning caption - be healthy and walk to school, or take your scooter and you’ll look really cool - alongside a photo of pupils walking and scooting to school.
As a prize the school took part in Festival in a Day, a day of art, music and drama workshops delivered by Hopscotch Theatre Company.
“Congratulations to everyone at Orchard Primary for their healthy, environmentally friendly approach to the school run,” said Councillor Michael McPake, convener of the council’s Infrastructure Committee.
“The pupils have encouraged parents and carers to be more active and walk, cycle or scoot to school on a regular basis, which helps them to be fitter and reduce car emissions around their school.”
Orchard Primary also picked up a silver level Rights Respecting Schools Award from children’s charity Unicef.
Among other things, pupils raised awareness of children’s rights and ran a competition to design a Rights Respecting mascot for their school.
Orchard Primary acting principal teacher of equity Laura Gibb said: “We will now be working towards the gold level award which will involve working in partnership with the Rights Respecting pupil group within Clyde Valley High School.
“Our aim is to become a Rights Respecting campus.”
