Family’s cars are set ablaze

- Ross Thomson

A Wishaw family have been left badly shaken after two of their cars were torched as they slept.

No-one was injured in the attack in Hopefield Gardens, Gowkthrapple, but a source close to the family, who did not want to be identified, said they were left distressed by the incident.

He said: “They don’t feel comfortable living in their own home.

“It’s very traumatic for anyone having to go through that. They are very distressed.”

The alarm was raised at 12.30am last Wednesday when the vehicles, a Volkswagen Golf and Alfa Romeo, were set ablaze.

The police and fire service were called and arrived quickly on the scene.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The service was alerted at 12.52am on Wednesday, July 4, to reports of a fire involving two vehicles in Wishaw.

“Operations Control mobilised one fire engine to Hopefield Gardens, where firefighters extinguished the fire.

“A third vehicle suffered superficial damage as a result of the heat from the flames. “There were no casualties. “Crews left at 1.15am after ensuring the area was made safe.” Despite repeated efforts, the Wishaw Press was unable to obtain any response from the police in relation to the incident other than to say that it was a “live enquiry”.

Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact police on 101.
