Support for armed forces
Veterans joined North Lanarkshire councillors in raising the flag to mark Armed Forces Day.
Provost Jean Jones raised the Armed Forces Flag at Motherwell Civic Centre with local veterans’associations and current serving officers in attendance.
The event gives communities across Britain the opportunity to celebrate, honour and thank past and present service personnel for their commitment, sacrifice and dedication to the country.
It mirrors other similar events taking place outside buildings and famous landmarks across the UK.
Provost Jones said:“By flying the flag, we show our support for the men and women and their families who make up the armed forces community.
“I would like to thank our local veterans’associations and current service officers who have come along today to support this occasion.”
This year marks a century since the end of World War One so the ceremony carried added significance.
Armed Forces and Veterans champion, Councillor David Cullen, added:“This annual occasion gives us the chance to show our appreciation for the selfless sacrifice and dedication given to our country by our Armed Services personnel and it was great to see so many representatives attending the event.”
